Departure from Ceglie, Martina and other countries on request.
A day in Matera begins with the smell of freshly baked bread and a quiet breakfast in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the beating heart of the modern city but with breathtaking views of the Sassi. After a good coffee and a croissant, you descend slowly towards the Sasso Barisano, a maze of alleys, arches and houses carved into the rock, where time seems to have stopped.
Walking among the ancient dwellings, it is worth entering one of the houses cave still furnished as a time, to discover the hard but fascinating life of the materani until a few decades ago. From there, the route continues to the rock churches: environments carved in stone, full of history and spirituality. Santa Lucia alle Malve, with its ancient frescoes, leaves a deep impression.
When the sun is high, you stop for lunch in a traditional trattoria where you can taste typical dishes of Lucania, such as orecchiette with rapa tops or caciocavallo hanging, perhaps accompanied by a glass of Aglianico del Vulture.
In the early afternoon continue to the Sasso Caveoso, more wild and less restored, where the stone and the landscape seem to merge into a single large sculpture. If you want to walk, you can cross the Gravina and climb up to the Belvedere di Murgia Timone, from which you can admire all of Matera in a movie scenario.
